Jason Joyce
I’m Jason and I am the chair of Cycle Wilmslow. With the help of the commitme at Cycle Wilmslow we work together to improve the cycling experience in the local area. I have been involved with CW over the last 10 years and enjoy cycling in the area especially when the weather is good! I have enjoyed cycling in various locations as diverse as Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, London and the “world’s most dangerous road” in Bolivia.

I’ve always been a utility cyclist, using my bike for local journeys – shopping, errands and, years ago, I used to take my two small children on the back of a trike. In retirement, I discovered the pleasure of social cycling with Wilmslow U3A cycling group. These days, I’m glad to have the benefit of an electric boost on my bike to use for the steeper hills! I belong to CycleWilmslow because I want more cycling in our locality, encouraging cyclists to feel they are entitled to use our roads safely.

I’ve been involved in campaigns to make cycling safer and easier in the Wilmslow and wider areas for over 20 years, initially through Macclesfield Borough Bike User Group and, since 2009, as a founding member of CycleWilmslow. I cycle for utility (work commute and doing errands) as well as pottering about the local area for leisure with my wife, Paula.

I’ve loved cycling since I was in primary school. In the holidays I’d be given money for a bag of chips and told not to come home until teatime. With my friends, we worked out the best places for good ‘BMX-like’ rides and would have competitions to see who could do the fastest ‘circuits’. By the time I started secondary school, I was allowed to go further and would sort out much longer routes with a friend eg. to Snowdonia, stopping at youth hostels on the way with the only proviso being that one of us had to phone home each night.
Throughout the rest of my life I’ve enjoyed cycling for leisure and commuting and continued to do the 20 mile round-trip to work right up to retirement in 2020. Over the last few years, in conjunction with the Tatton Estate, National Trust and Cheshire East Council, I have helped to design the Greater Bollin Trail which is an ambitious project to link the Trans Pennine Trail near Dunham to the Middlewood Way through the Bollin Valley.
I first joined CycleWilmslow in 2025 when I read about their great work clearing cycle paths by ‘bashing’ the brambles. As well as this valuable work the group has been a tremendous advocate for cycling in and around Wilmslow and I am really looking forward to continuing this task.
